Which means now all you'd have to do to defeat a Pharaoh is have an awful lot
of Resources on the table (aside from Broken Wings, that is). Makes Pharaohs a
lot less powerful, now doesn't it?

Er, I did? I guess I did ... I wish I had the original text of it,
though, if its not the one I recently posted. Should anyone have it
OCR'able, feel free to send it to me or, in extremis, a copy of
Edgeworks #4. :)

Someone mentioned VtM and Al Amarja. Then someone mentioned In Nomine. Any
thoughts on introducing Celestials and Diabolicals to Al Amarja? I'd think
they'd fit right in, but would be in for some competition from the fringe
powers there.

Also, mention of OverTE and Pyramid came up. In Pyramid issue 26, John Nephew
wrote what looks like the first of a series called The CPC Files. CPC = Center
for Paranormal Control. Introduces an OTE campaign for players who know too
much.

<PLUG>
BTW, Pyramid has gone online now. After issue #30, no more paper copy. It costs
$15 a year and gives you new articles every week, access to the Pyramid
archives of all previous articles (though they haven't all been loaded yet),
access to SJGames playtesting, message boards, chats, news, etc. There are
columns from Kenneth Hite and Steve Fritz.

Pyramid isn't an SJGames house organ. They cover many games, including: OTE,
Castle Falkenstein, Mage:TA, Vampire:TM, Deadlands, Pendragon, Earthdawn,
Shadowrun, Whispering Vault, Feng Shui, Paranoia, CoC, etc., as well as GURPS,
In Nomine, Toon, INWO, and the rest of the SJGames catalog. I find it a great
value. My most used parts are the message boards and the playtests, and the new
articles of course.

You can try out some stuff at this URL:
http://www.sjgames.com/pyramid/

Oh, I just found the CPC Files article in their list of sample articles, so you
can read it free:

I considered introducing my In Nomine party to Al Amarja, but I eventually
decided the epic themes of my In Nomine campaign would overshadow many of
the things I like about Al Amarja. (Angels and Demons tend to be very
focused on The War and would see much of Al Amarja's "petty squabbles" as
beneath them).
Introducing Celestials to an Over The Edge campaign is a much more workable
idea, and could be extremely fun. Sorcery in In Nomine consists of
summoning a Demon, making a bargain and hoping you got the better part of
the deal. This has much potential.
Also I wonder how the Earthlings or Neutralisers would react to Angels, who
are basically good, but have very different priorities to humans, and can
seem cruel and callous. I can see both Angels and Demons being classed as
supernatural threats to humanity.
When Archangel Gabriel blows her horn seven times to begin Armageddon and
the final War, everyone loses (except perhaps Mr. LeThuy). This could make
for an interesting scenario with many hasty (temporary) alliances being
thrown up to save humanity, or a vast increase in backstabbing and conflict
as everyone panics.

Hm, maybe they should read Pierced Heart...

I've considered combining In Nomine with Over the Edge in the following
simple but interesting way:

Al Amarja, for some reason, is the one place in the universe where
celestials don't gain Dissonance or other effects from their actions.

Many rumors surround this oddity - that it is a place "outside of God's
sight," or that it is a place forsaken by God. in any case, it is a
temptation for Celestials who would like to go do something out of view
of their masters and not gain Dissonance. Similarly, demons can operate
without restrictions in Al Amarja.

The place is avoided by many because of the suspicion going there
generates in your boss, and because it can be a dangerous place even for
celestials.

Simple, yet has so many options...

hi, James... it doesnt really matter how much experience you have;
you just need a deck, time to do email, and some patience. if you
have questions about the game, just ask myself or Clay... we are
playing 3 player.

this then is how to play OnTE by email;

when it is your turn, you will send mail to the other 2 people playing
(that is to ejome@execpc.com and eris@bga.com) with a subject in the
following form;

Eric's Turn, Eric 0, James 1, Clay 10

this subject lists whose turn it is, and what each players score is.
it is important to not change the subject even while we are discussing
the turn (if necessary) and to not add any pull you make during the
turn to the subject until the next players turn starts.

the body of the message should contain a short description of what you
would _like_ to do that turn. if a player has no actions they would
like to play during the turn as written, simply send a mail to the
group saying "ok, next turn". this is, in my experience, the most
common way for a turn to go.

if, in the listing of a turn, you find something you want to interfere
with, such as an attack, you should send a message to all players with
noting what action and how you are affecting it. This is generally
called an interference or interrupt and we must use a series of emails
to resolve it. dont worry, usually these things are not long and you
can often help them a bit by giving "if" clauses in you original turn.

a classic example of a turn and interrupt would look like this. say,
Clay has Akorra Encombi and Akio Morimoto in play in one file Akorra
cranked, Akio not, James has Mantra in play uncranked, and i have no
cards in play.  given the subject above, i would give the following turn;

play Friends in Golden Barrio
crank to call Giovanni Mancini and Bitter & Herb one rank up
crank GM to call Lino Briazzi in the front rank of same file
crank B&H to call Peer Solgerkvist left of Lino
attack Akio Morimoto with Lino
done

James, please use Mantra on Akio when i attack.

this may go exactly as written... James should send a note to all
answering my request for Mantra to lower Akio's DP. if the answer
is yes, Clay may have an action. if it is no, then i may have an
action. we all exchange to work out the details, but it doesnt
take more than a a few posts usually; how many times do you see more
than 2 cards played per combat? if you want to formalize this entire
process a bit more, we can (there is a formal way to do pbem but it
is slow and imho not needed).

certain cards can cause lengthier turns, such as Rampage or Harmattan,
but it is important to note that in general things are pretty smooth.
it is generally a pretty good idea to show how you are paying for things
if it gets complicated... please be tolerant if people ask how things
are being done during a turn.

so, any questions? if not, shuffle up your deck and draw ten cards.
Clay, why dont you go first and i will go second (unless someone has
a burning desire for a particluar turn order)? it will be helpful
if you can lay out the other peoples conspiracies on a table in your
home or note them out on paper as we go.

I think the preferred protocol when talking to yourself is to say,
"HEY, ME!" instead of "HEY, YOU!" I must confess, though, I'm glad
you sent this to the list. I was kind of curious as well as to how a
pbem ccg would work. It seems like this system involves quite a bit
of trust. Maybe an applet is called for. Not a applet to play OnTE
(heaven forbid!), just one that would deal cards, keep the players
honest.

In the few PBEM games I've been involved with, I make it Cardinal
Rule #1 to Trust My Opponents Not To Cheat. I figger that, if
folks will go through the trouble and have the patience to endure
the required-slower pace of a game, and understand the lack of
checks and balances, they'll be cool enough to understand and
abide by honest play. After all, it's the play first, and the
winning (or losing :-) second.

Okay, I'll let the secret out... I've spoken to George Fink, creater of
Deckserver, which allows for the playing of CCG in a PBEM format and keep
things fair. Check out the website:
http://www.deckserver.net for details. Let's try to get On The Edge into
this format!
