Subject: [The Edge] OnTE in Minneapolis?

Greetings,

I'll be in Minneapolis for a conference this coming week Wed.-Sun.,
and I was wondering if there might be any OnTE groups (or gaming
groups in general) that might welcome a visitor. I know I'll be free
Sat. afternoon and evening, plus probably Friday evening and perhaps
Thursday.

For that matter, I'm planning on trying to get to the Source while I'm
there. Any other really good shops in the area I should make a point of
getting to? I'm particularly interested in places carrying European
imports, since those are essentially unheard of here in Utah (sigh).

Responses should probably go directly to me at minnotte@math.usu.edu.

Thanks,

Mike Minnotte

As it happens, Atlas Games in the person of Jerry Corrick will be at the East
Coast Game Faire, and I'm sure he'd be happy to get in on a game or two of
OnTE...

In a message dated 98-05-09 12:46:07 EDT, you write:

<< * CPC Character Creation, including a half dozen pregenerated characters
that
can be used as PCs, NPCs, or inspirational examples>>

Very good idea here, especially since it can help to introduce newbies to OTE
more smoothly. (Even tho I don't see a CPC series as being eactly perfect for
newbies)

 <<* Information about the CPC
 * Technology - available from CPC fringe scientists, or familiar from past
 threats the CPC has faced>>

I would suggest making sure that there are at least a couple of devices that
are almost as dangerous to use as they are to have used on you. After all,
this is fringe tech and should be somewhat unpredictable and a little scary to
use.

<< * Field Guide to the Paranormal - a sort of dictionary of weird things,
from
abductions to water power (fringe science that splits water into oxygen and
hydrogen, and then recombines them to release energy). Players can get some
 of the background that a CPC agent would have on fringe phenomena and terms;
GMs can mine it for story ideas. (Water power violates the laws of physics,
so how does this oppenheimer's machine work...perhaps through psychic energy?
CPC agents are dispatched to investigate...)>>

This has just gotta have at least a small "bestiary" of
supernatural/paranormal creatures. It would be especially cool if you could
put an Al Amarja twist on some of the old standby creatures, like Vampires,
Werewolves and the Men In Black. Hey, maybe you could expand on the Ghost Clan
from "It Waits..."

<< The Administrator's File is for the GM(s)...there may be more than one if
"troupe-style play" is employed. Some sections I see it having include:

 * Allies & Enemies -- Some info on other forces that may cooperate with or
 hinder the CPC>>

You mean like pesky FBI agents with super powerful cell phones?:)

<<* Plots -- big plots, and smaller adventure seeds; maybe even an
introductory
 CPC scenario.>>

A scenario would be very helpful, especially if it can give the players a
taste of how truly strange things can get when your chasing weird sh*t around
the Edge.

<<* Important GMCs of the CPC (top administrators, etc.)>>

Some of whom may beas strange as the above mentioned weird sh*t.

John Nephew kindly told us about his plans for an upcoming CPC book:

>Rather than being naive burger, they [the players] are knowledgeable
>investigators of the supernatural in the service of Her Exaltedness.

I think this is a good idea, since it makes it easier for OTE GMs to play
in other OTE games. Although they still have to act ignorant about the
major plots....

>So my question for the list is...what cool topics would you want to see in
>such a sourcebook?

It seems that this would overlap a lot with Cloaks (since it seems all of
the characters would be Cloaks, right?). What do you see as the
relationship between the two books?

Since this is related to the supernatural, you may want to talk about the
use of horror roleplaying in OTE.

>* Technology - available fron CPC fringe scientists, or familiar from past
>threats the CPC has faced

I sometimes have trouble envisioning fringe tech (especially the
rationalization behind them). I would appreciate examples...

>* Field Guide to the Paranormal - a sort of dictionary of weird things,
from abductions to water power (fringe science that splits water into
oxygen and hydrogen, and then recombines them to release energy). Players

investigate...)

How about doing this bestiary as official CPC reports? Just a possibility.
That would put the reader into a more governmental mood and focus on the
uncertainty of the information. It would also give the GM lots of stuff to
work with ("We want you to follow up on this report of people whose brains
have been removed but have no visible cuts...")

It would also be interesting to have "conversion suggestions" for how to
run a group of CIA agents, Interpol agents, etc.

>* Plots -- big plots, and smaller adventure seeds; maybe even an
>introductory CPC scenario.

One possibility is to give adventures (or adventure outlines) based on
material available in the players section. So you give the players
information in the bestiary or just in a section of reports/newspapers,
etc. and then you give adventure ideas off that. This is a similar format
to the Earthdawn "Legend of Earthdawn" books which have stories in the
front and then related adventures in the back.

As a final note, I generally don't like books that have player and game
master sections. First of all, they often don't work since the players
read the whole thing. Second, they are sort of a rip off. I think it
would be interesting to create the whole book from a player perspective (or
mostly from a player's perspective), giving lots of materials to work with,
and let the game moderators develop the information however they want.
Rather than an adventure, perhaps you could have a typed up briefing given
to the characters of some sort of mystery they are supposed to solve. Of
course, other people no doubt have other preferences... Rather than say
who has influence in the CPC (Pharaohs, Movers, etc), there could be a list
of rumors the GM could mine ("I hear a group of Arabic immortals is using
the CPC as a way of preparing Al Amarja for the upcoming jihad").

Thanks for bringing this onto the list. This is our chance to say
something about the future of OTE...

I really love this idea. It would give us a "mature" book for mature and
experienced

Steve Fritz mentioned in his "Action Packed Strategies" column on Pyramid
Online (http://www.sjgames.com/pyramid) the following:

"Tuff Stuff's Gamer Magazine has come up with a subscription deal that's
sure to garner a lot of interest from card game fans.

Anyone who takes a full year's subscription to Gamer will not only get
a starter deck of Atlas' Games underappreciated On The Edge CCG, but 15
booster packs of each of the major supplements. In other words, you get the
deck and 60 booster packs, total. Both groups value this at $125 worth of
merchandise for a $14.95 year-long subscription.

Even though Atlas hasn't produced an Edge card set in two years, it's
still one of my personal favorite card games. If you want to find out why,
here's a heck of a way to find out for yourself.

For more info, call Tuff Stuff at (800) 334-7165."

BTW, Pyramid has been covering a fair amount of stuff on OTE recently.
Over the past two weeks they reviewed OTE (2nd) and Pierced Heart. They
also reviewed Spammers (The new Atlas Games Card Game). In their archives
they have John Nephew's "CPC Files" article.

Speaking of good magazines (and their relation to OTE), Shadis has had two
OTE articles in the last seven issues (Nekromancy by Nephew in 41 and
Escape! by Tidball in 44. The last issue I have got was 47).
